Welcome to Casa Velha do Palheiro
Nestled in the hills to the east of Funchal, Estalagem Casa Velha do Palheiro is situated just 7km (15 minutes) from the centre of Funchal. The Casa Velha is surrounded by 120,000 sq. mts. of landscaped subtropical gardens - the Palheiro Gardens.
Madeira is renowned for its beautiful levada walks and breathtaking scenery. Casa Velha is also ideally situated to explore the island, certainly as near to nature as one can get.
The Casa Velha do Palheiro's other neighbour is the championship Palheiro Golf Course, voted in the top ten by Golf Monthly as "one of the most stunning golf courses in the world."
The Casa Velha do Palheiro was built in the early 19th century as a hunting lodge for the Count Carvalhal. Renovated in 1996, the hotel opened on the 1st May 1997 as Madeira's first five star Country House Hotel, a type of accommodation more common in England. The hotel is a member of the Relais et Châteaux chain. Casa Velha's unique location, being the only hotel located on a golf course, makes it the ideal choice for the visiting golfer.
Madeira is home to two championship courses. Both offer stunning views in different ways: Palheiro over the bay of Funchal and gardens, and at 600 metres above sea level Santo da Serra has views over the neighbouring Desertas islands and valleys below.
Designed by the American golf architect Cabell Robinson, Palheiro Golf is a par 72 championship course of 6086 metres. Nearly two-thirds of the course is carved out of pine forest and botanical woodland established over the last 100 years, making the most of the Madeiran hills, ridges and deep valleys.
There are five par 3 holes, eight par 4s and five par 5s, the longest being 538 metres. The last two par 4s are the most testing on the course and the finish is a fitting par 5, which plays towards the beautiful Clubhouse.
